Matrescence & identity

For mothers grieving their old life, career or sense of self while loving their child.

Something shifted the moment you became a mother — and it wasn't just your sleep, your schedule, or your body. It was you.

The world has a word for this now: matrescence. The becoming of a mother. And like adolescence, it's a profound, whole-person transformation that touches everything — your sense of self, your relationships, your body, your identity, your place in the world. It can take two to three years to move through, and yet nobody really tells you that. Nobody hands you a map.

So if you're standing in the middle of it right now feeling disoriented, overwhelmed, or quietly grieving a version of yourself you're not sure you'll ever get back — I want you to know: that's not you falling apart. That's you in the middle of something enormous.

The rug didn't get pulled out from underneath you. The ground is just changing shape.

Everything changes at once

Becoming a mother doesn't just change what you do — it changes who you are. Your career might feel foreign now. Your partnership might feel different. Friendships that used to fit don't quite fit anymore. The way you move through the world, how you see yourself, what matters — all of it is shifting.

And when everything changes at once, it can feel like you've lost your footing entirely.

That loss is real. And it deserves to be named.

The grief no one talks about

Part of what makes the motherhood transition so quietly painful is that we don't have language for the grief inside it. We don't give ourselves — or each other — permission to grieve the woman we were before.

But any true transformation asks you to let go of who you used to be, to make room for who you are becoming. That's not weakness. That's the work.

Trail markers for the journey

I think of the matrescence journey a little like a mountain hike. You're moving, you're working hard — but sometimes the trail disappears and you're not sure you're going the right way. You feel lost. Confused. Exhausted. And then — you look up, and there's a trail marker. Oh. I'm still on the path.

That's what I want to offer you: trail markers.

A framework that helps you make sense of where you are and what's happening — not so that you can hurry through it, but so that you can breathe inside it. So the disorientation softens. So the grief feels less like a sign something's wrong and more like a sign you're human, and you're in the middle of something real.

There is beauty here too

Matrescence doesn't only take things from you. It opens things in you too — creativity, clarity about what matters, a deeper knowing of yourself, a capacity for connection that runs bone-deep. Those things aren't gone. They're still unfolding.

You are not broken. You are not behind. You are not doing it wrong.

You are in a process — and this is a soft place to land inside it.

Together, we can

  • Make sense of where you are in the journey
  • Name and grieve what's changed, without guilt
  • Reconnect with the parts of you that still matter
  • Build an identity as a mother that actually feels like you
  • Find your way back to yourself — not who you were, but who you're becoming

This work is for you if you're feeling lost in motherhood, disconnected from yourself or your baby, quietly grieving, overwhelmed by the enormity of the change, or simply longing for someone who truly gets it.
